Great Suburban wine bars need a few essential ingredients : delicious cheese and charcuterie matched with a list of top drops. Old Seven husband and wife team Matt Lucas and Nellie Barker meet the brief perfectly with their 320 strong bottle list, including 40 Rosés, delightful platters and a focus on gooey cheesy jaffles. With it’s antique furniture and laid back approach, it’s the sort of place you can casually drop into at your leisure. Wine-lovers will delight in the blackboards hanging on the walls to promote seasonal wine flights and vinos of the month. The deep wine list has some rare vintage wines at very reasonable prices. Be great to live closer! Josh Martin

2022 - Top 60 in Queensland

A list that travels the globe and back again, with a big feature section on French rose complete with quirky wine notes. Outside of the pink stuff, lots of cabernet and shiraz, with keenly chosen cellared wines there, and plenty of lesser-known varieties for those exploring more broadly. Great to see some of the stars of the wine world like Sassicaia, Guigal and Girardin rubbing shoulders alongside more avant-garde expressions from COS, Ricca Terra and Sigurd. It feels like a great collection for those seeking a night focused on wine exploration, with diversity of wine producers a strong motif in the list. Boutique wines stick out for interest and value especially. Great stuff here.

You want rose? The Old Seven Wine Bar has rose - lots of it. French, Lebanese, Australian, Spanish and Greek, to name a few. Specialising in premo jaffles, fromage and charcuterie and featuring 37 wines available by the glass - there's a lot to like at the Old Seven. Some highlights include aged Alsatian riesling, Loire whites, aged wines (both red and white), a decent slew of cru gamay and a confetti-like array of Australian and New Zealand wines that are deisgned to surprise and delight. With a selection of wines from all across the globe in a variety of styles, we'll say it again... there's a lot to like here!

2020 - Top 30 in Queensland

With Australian, French, Italian and Spanish inspired fromage and charcuterie platters and a terrific range of cheese and ploughmans boards, there are plenty of great food options to partner with a perfect choice of wines from this extensive though not daunting wine list. While it might be tempting to stay in the Rosé section of the list – there are 32 of them – and these really show off how diverse this style can be, there are also many other great choices that make the list well worth a careful browse to find that gem you were after. This is a place to keep coming back to.

2019 - Top 50 Queensland

It must be the year of the neighbourhood wine bar because here’s another terrific addition. Clearly taking its inspiration from France with its fromage and charcuterie menu bolstered by tartines and jaffles, so there are many Gallic wines on this neat and manageable list. Complements for offering 12 terrific French roses, alongside main varieties and some cool stuff in between such as Girolamo Russo nerello mascalese or Home Hill pinot noir.
